Our mission in the library is to create a love of reading and develop life long learners. Students have the opportunity to check out books often from the library to develop their personal interests, or continue to learn about subjects being taught in the classroom. Mrs. Cohen meets with teachers every six weeks to develop lessons that enrich the classroom experience, meet state standards, and teach information skills.
The library supports the Accelerated Reader program, a reading management program. Tusculum is host to an annual Scholastic Book Fair in the library, when parents are encouraged to attend with their child during special extended hours.
A new literacy program is Tusculum STARS. Parents are allowed to check out 1 book or book/CD kit at a time. Special checkout times for parents are Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Students have a special form to fill out as books are shared together. When 20 books have been read, the student will be recognized during morning announcements, their picture posted on a Tusculum STAR bulletin board, and he/she will receive a free book. Additional titles have been purchased in the format of bilingual text and books with audio CDs.
The morning news show is broadcast live from the library at 8:00a.m. each day. Students from each of the 4th grade classrooms run the camera and introduce the program.
